Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry

Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry

Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry

Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry premiered in April of 2006 and is hosted by Clayton "Big Trigger" Corley Sr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The concept of the online radio show is based on parings of jazz musicians and their poetic contemporaries.

The early shows highlighted the music of John Coltrane and the poetry of Amiri Baraka. Dinah Washington and George Benson.  SOJP features both legends and the newer artists in both genres. SOJP is also known for its in-depth interviews with poets such as Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Sandra Turner-Barnes, Toni Love, and musicians, Mulgrew Miller, Odean Pope, Roy Ayers, Pat Martino, and more!

These interviews provide artists a international online forum to talk about their work and the creative process.

For SOJP's conversation with Oni Lasana and other fabulous artists.

Free service is not FREEDOM.

February 7, 2020|I-Muse

I have a issue with the only national holiday in honor of a AFRICAN man in America, is held up to be a day of FREE services in some communities. We should be doing good in all communities, EVERYDAY.

Yes, it is clear, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is quoted on the benefits of being of service to others. But should it only be on the ONLY African American NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

Why do I say this? Let us consider the fact, Africans who were brought to American, more than any other race of people. Africans in America were forced, gave and suffered FREELY in the bondage's of human slavery.

You would think, if we are to celebrate anything in America it would be to get hired, equal pay, respect and compensation for our work.

Many storyteller/griots in America all know peak employment is from Kwanzaa till the end of February (Black Storyteller's Employment month). This idea of service or in kind donation being taught to school children and sometimes expected for our work, no matter your profession, just doesn't sit well with me.

Why not make Valentine's Day the special day to show LOVE and donate time and energy in service to community?

Africans in America fought for a holiday for MLK JR. and somebody comes up with the dumb idea to make it a day of service to others...oh I get it. African folks are sho' nuff in service folks to eve'rbody sir, OR is it for Caucasians to volunteer in black communities?

Let's not forget, Dr. King went to Memphis to protect the RIGHTS and secure equal pay for the sanitation workers...he did not give his life for them to be in service or volunteer! He was present for them to GET PAID!

Haven't Africans in America worked for free long enough in this country?

In the building of national monuments, WORKED the blood stained plantations, FREE..in the homes of Caucasians!

FREE AIN'T even FREE. So lets not recognize FREE SERVICE on MLK, JR. day.

Let any day WE choose to be a day of service to whomever we please, to give of our talents, to build up our communities, our country, our homes, our neighborhoods, ourselves any day!

FREELY.

What say you?
